Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) witnessed a tumultuous Monday morning as students organized a peaceful demonstration at G-Square to voice their concerns and demands. The protest, which began at 9 am, resulted in an unfortunate incident at the Students Centre, where a fire broke out, destroying all business structures and leaving student entrepreneurs in a state of uncertainty.

The primary objective of the protest was to draw the attention of the university management, particularly the Vice Chancellor, to address several pressing issues affecting the student community. These demands encompassed fee increments, de-registration of students, the reopening of Manyani ground, a comprehensive report on a missing student, Daniel Muvea, and the matter of 50% unit registration.

The first demand put forth by the protesting students was a fee increment of Ksh 6000. They argued that such an increase would help improve the quality of education and the overall university experience. However, they requested that the management consider the financial implications this would have on the already burdened students and explore viable alternatives.

The second demand stemmed from the negligence of lecturers, which had caused missing marks and subsequent de-registration of students from the university’s portal. The students called for immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that affected individuals were reinstated without undue delay.

Another significant demand was the reopening of Manyani ground, a vital learning facility within the university campus. Its closure had disrupted student activities and limited access to essential resources, impacting academic progress. The students urged the management to address this issue promptly and provide an alternative solution until the ground was reopened.

A distressing demand related to the disappearance of a student named Daniel Muvea. The protesting students demanded a comprehensive report on the investigation into his case, seeking answers and accountability from the university administration. They emphasized the importance of student safety and requested that the matter be treated with utmost urgency.

Lastly, the students expressed concerns regarding the matter of 50% unit registration. They called for a transparent and fair system that would allow students to register for the necessary courses without any complications or unfair restrictions.

However, amidst the peaceful protest, chaos erupted when a fire broke out at the Students Centre, destroying all business structures within its vicinity. This incident has left student entrepreneurs in a state of dilemma, unsure of how to move forward with their businesses and livelihoods. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and authorities are working to ascertain whether it was an accident or a deliberate act.

The university management has taken note of the students’ grievances and assures them that their demands will be given due consideration. The Vice Chancellor and relevant administrative officials are set to hold discussions with student representatives to find amicable solutions and restore normalcy to the campus.

Meanwhile, the affected students and entrepreneurs are urged to seek support from the university’s counselling services and relevant authorities to overcome the challenges they now face. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peaceful demonstrations and ensuring the safety and well-being of all members of the university community.

Technical University of Mombasa hopes to swiftly address the concerns raised by its students and restore an environment conducive to learning and growth.
